In Living Color - Season 1
The TV series In Living Color's complete first season was definitely ready for prime time, unlike the original Saturday Night Live cast. However, the question remained: was prime time ready for In Living Color? This 1990 sketch-comedy series, created by Keenen Ivory Wayans, boldly ventured where SNL had feared to tread, particularly in the realms of race relations and cultural stereotypes. Wayans, hot off his hilarious blaxploitation spoof I'm Gonna Git Ya Sucka, had to sell the pilot for an entire year before it was picked up.
Wayans fronted a young, gifted, and predominantly black cast, including David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson, Damon Wayans, Kim Wayans, and T'Keyah "Crystal" Keyman. The white members of the ensemble, "James" Carrey and Kelly Coffield, were the Garret Morrises of this troupe.
Like the first season of SNL, In Living Color played the role of provocateur, with sketches such as "Homeboy Shopping Network," "This Old Box," and "Ted Turner's Very Colorized Classics" pushing the boundaries of political correctness. Other sketches, such as "Riding Miss Daisy," exhibited a defiant, anti-establishment spirit. No one was spared from the show's satirical gaze, not even icons like Richard Pryor, and sketches like "The Wrath of Farrakhan" demonstrated the series' willingness to tackle controversial figures and topics.
Among the breakout characters from the first season were Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier's finger-snapping "Men on Film," and Damon's Homey D. Clown. Carrey also shone as the "female" bodybuilder Vera DeMilo, while Coffey's portrayals of Samantha Kinison and Andrea Dice Clay were equally hilarious.
While much of the topical humor has dated, sketches like "Michael Jackson Potato Head" have a timeless quality. The joy of revisiting this groundbreaking series lies in witnessing these fearless and talented performers pushing the boundaries of sketch comedy, and making the most of their unlikely opportunity to bring their unique perspectives to the mainstream.
